CAD Designer / Tooling Manager

An established specialty manufacturing company, located North of Pittsburgh, is seeking a CAD Designer / Tooling Manager (CDTM).



  • Responsible for all modeling aspects of the design of products and tooling.
  • Makes product drawings which meet our customer’s expectations in preparation for production. These drawings are either conceptual drawings for prototypes or certified drawings for production.
  • Other drawings include tooling drawings and creating NC code for CNC machining.
  • Utilize Solidworks, AutoCad, and FeatureCam software.
  • Will machine by hand or via CNC mill, all tooling and parts required for products and machinery. May need to use creativity and judgment to solve problems that are frequent and unique. Will meet all drawing, tooling, and part deadlines.
  • Adhere to ISO project design and development procedures. Reviews ISO documents engineering related documents and provides updates as required.
  • Accurately records all engineering time and associated costs with projects.
  • Design customer products and tooling using SolidWorks, AutoCAD Lt, and FeatureCam software. Tooling consists of but not limited to, machined molds, steel rule dies and RF seal tooling.
  • Machine Tooling and Parts on manual end mill, manual lathe, and CNC milling machine.
  • Must obtain quotes from vendors, manage tooling due dates and label all tooling for inventory accuracy. Ensures all tooling, including CNC tooling, is logged into the tooling worksheets.
  • Interacts with Project Managers by providing tooling cost and design ideas for customer products.
  • Utilizes project numbers for all drawings and numbering system for identification of prints. Assists in all customer drawing check-ins and sign offs as required, including but not limited to scanning and filing current revision drawings into the ERP system, login files to the engineering drive and vault system, and archiving old versions.
  • Improve and develop the CAD department procedures to support future growth. Ensure all CAD/CAM computer software is up to date with service packs.


  • Minimum of a HS Diploma along with at least 3 years of experience working with CAM, CNC milling and 3D CAD.
  • Must have experience using AutoCAD and SolidWorks.
  • Experience working with plastics or polymers is a plus.
  • Must possess excellent communication skills verbally and in writing to both the customer and co-workers within Engineering, Production, Research & Development and Quality Control.
  • Good computer skills are required, including MS Office software and working knowledge of word processing, spreadsheet, inventory, database software, as well as CAD and CAM software..
  • Requires ability to work under pressure, effectively handle stress and adhere to stringent deadlines.
  • Must possess strong analytical math skills.
  • Shift: 8am-4:30pm, Mon-Fri
